About the course
Robyn Ochs' widely recognized definition of bisexuality — an acknowledgement that one has in themselves ‘the potential to be attracted — romantically and/or sexually — to people of more than one gender, not necessarily at the same time, in the same way, or to the same degree' — has profoundly shaped the bisexual community. Individuals who experience attraction to more than one gender, whether romantically or sexually, have formed diverse communities around terms that best describe their experiences. Without erasing or dismissing the broad diversity of plurisexualities, this course will specifically explore the history of minority stressors faced by bisexual-identified individuals in therapeutic settings. By examining these historical contexts alongside current cultural understandings, clinicians will gain a deeper understanding of bisexuality and develop more affirmative therapeutic practices.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Identify at least two historical minority stressors commonly experienced by bisexual individuals within therapeutic contexts 2. Describe how current cultural contexts and understandings of bisexuality can inform clinical practice 3. Develop and articulate at least two specific affirmative therapeutic strategies for working with bisexual clients
